Thrum - Rifferama

thrum ...
v.intr.
1. Music To strum idly on a stringed instrument.
2. To speak in a monotonous tone of voice; drone.
The dictionary definition of Thrum could not be further from the truth when describing the Scottish band of the same name. They certainly didn't strum idly on their guitars and singer Monica Queen's voice could never be described as monotonous. In fact it's hard to believe that the soaring vocals actually come from someone so small in stature. I have read Thrum's sound described thus ' imagine a band with Tammy Wynette on vocals and Neil Young on guitar' * and 'Sonic Youth meets KD Lang' **. I think that sums the band up pretty well. Formed in Lanarkshire in the early 90's the band had a relatively short career which spawned just the one album and a few singles but the band are very much an important part of the Scottish music history. monica and guitarist Johnny Smillie have gone on to release two albums under the name 'Monica Queen'.
