The Pop Alphabet is a trawl through my cd collection in alphabetical order (ok, I'm just showing off since I've finally managed to get the stacks of discs into some kind of order after years of neglect). Starting today with the letter 'A'.

Arab Strap : Arab Strap were a post-folk indie band from Scotland, signed for the majority of their albums to independent record label Chemikal Underground. The duo had a short lived flirtation with a major label at the peak of their critical acclaim (post-Philophobia) when they signed to Go!Beat records (a former independent label now owned by Universal). Vocalist Aidan Moffat and multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton met in Falkirk, Scotland, bonded over their mutual love for Drag City recording artists such as Smog and Will Oldham, and began a collaboration in 1995. The Auteurs : Unfairly dismissed as the egotrip of acclaimed songwriter Luke Haines, the Auteurs were one of the unsung bands of the mid-nineties movement. Releasing their first record, New Wave, in 1993, the Auteurs were compared to Suede, and the resurgent movement, and began to amass a reasonable cult following. [read_more]

Dot Allison : Message Personnel

Dot Allison was the singer with Glasgow band One Dove who released the classic album Morning White Dove in 1993. After the band split in 1996 Allison embarked on a solo career and released her first solo album, Afterglow in 1999. The lead track of this single which was released on the Heavenly record label is from that album.

Malcolm Middleton

If I was asked to describe Arab Strap the first thing I would mention would be Aidan Moffat's broad, distinct Scottish accent. Because of that it sometimes seemed that Malcolm Middleton was a lesser part of the band. To be honest it was only really when the band split that I started to realise that Middleton was at the very least an equal part in what made the band great. Don't get me wrong, Arab Strap wouldn't be Arab Strap without Moffat but his musical partner was every bit as important to the band's unique sound. While reading some blogs at the weekend I was directed to Middleton's own website (link below) and was delighted to find some fantastic mp3 downloads on there. I recommend anyone, whether a fan or a newcomer to his music to have a listen as Malcolm does his on take on songs by Girls Aloud, Ladyhawke and The Saturdays as well as some rare and unreleased versions of his own songs.

The track below was Middleton's contribution to the 2007 album 'Ballads of the Book', a project which saw Scottish musicians link up with Scottish writers and poets. The lyrics to Middleton's track were written by author Alan Bissett.
