The Delgados : Peel Session [2002]

This group, named after Spanish cyclist Pedro Delgado, have played an important role in the Scottish music scene, launching several careers, including Bis and Arab Strap, through their label Chemikal Underground. As musicians they typified the lo-fi Scottish indie sound, particularly on their first album 'Domestiques', which prompted Peel to call them 'the best in Britain, whilst their 1998 single 'Pull The Wires From The Wall' went to the top of that year's Festive Fifty. They later moved into more orchestral rock, working with former Flaming Lips producer Dave Friddman for the albums 'The Great Eastern' and 'Hate'. Their most recent release was 2004's 'Universal Audio'. [BBC_6 Music]

_______________________________________________________

The_Delgados recorded numerous sessions for the John Peel show but this one was a bit different as the band decided they would do 4 cover versions this time. The band chose the first 3 and allowed John Peel himself to pick the 4th. After rejecting tracks by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Lovin' Spoonful, Kenny Rogers + Dolly Parton, Peter Gabriel and Betty Boo the band decided on songs by E.L.O, Cat Stevens and the biggest surprise, the Dead Kennedys while Peel chose a track by Jamaican group The Symbols.

The session was recorded at Maida Vale Studios on 15th September 2002 and was first broadcast a month later.

Public Image Ltd : Peel Session [1979]

Public Image Ltd or PiL as they are sometimes known are one of the most experimental bands to come out of the UK punk scene. Formed and fronted by ex Pistol Johnny Rotten under his real surname Lydon the band adopted a more electronic feel than his previous band. With some dubby basslines and eerie keyboard lines the band at times sounded very dark and sinister. Surprisingly, the band only ever recorded one session for the John Peel show when they entered the Maida Vale studio in 1979. The band's line up for the session was Lydon : vocals. Keith Levine : guitar/synth. Jah Wobble : bass. Martin Atkins : drums.

Note: While PiL's earlier recordings are a must for any record collection some of the later stuff is er, crap for want of a better description. The above Peel Session came from a 4 disc set called 'Plastic Box'. Buy that if you can as a great introduction to the band.

The Undertones : Peel Session [1978]

The ultimate John Peel band. The Undertones' 'Teenage Kicks' of 1978 was named as the great man's favourite ever track. However, the Derry quintet who formed in 1976 - based around the voice of Feargal Sharkey, the song writing of John and Damian O'Neill and Michael Bradley, along with Billy Doherty - almost packed it in until Terry Hooley - a Belfast record shop owner - financed the 'Teenage Kicks EP'. Immediately championed by Peel (he once said, 'I still play Teenage Kicks to remind myself how a great record should sound') the band bagged a deal with Sire, who issued the equally essential adolescent odes, 'My Perfect Cousin' and 'Jimmy Jimmy'. The first album, 'The Undertones' and it's follow up 'Hypnotised' had immediate success whilst subsequent, more mature-sounding albums, 'Positive Touch' and 'The Sin Of Pride' didn't do as well and The Undertones split in 1983. Feargal Sharkey embarked on a brief solo career, before becoming an A&R man, whilst John O'Neill and Raymond Gorman formed That Petrol Emotion, with Damian O'Neill joining later. Since 1999, The Undertones have been back playing live shows: with Paul McLoone as the new lead singer, their first album for twenty years, 'Get What You Need', was released in 2003."We were a bunch of late teenagers having a good time. By January 1979 we were over supporting the Rezillos so we could do a session at Maida Vale. But the biggest thing that struck me at the time was that John Peel had paid for us to do that first tape the previous autumn out of his own pocket. I don't know of any other DJ that I've met who would care to that extent, show that much drive and commitment to the music."- Feargal Sharkey (From 'In Session Tonight' by Ken Garner)

Adam + The Ants : Peel Sessions

Mention Adam + The Ants to most people and they will mention Prince Charming, Stand and Deliver and THAT white stripe painted across Adam's nose. However, delve a bit deeper and the pre make-up/pirate uniform Ants were a different proposition. I recently bought the re-mastered edition of 'Dirk Wears White Sox' and surprisingly it holds up well alongside some of the so called indie/alternative/punk bands of today. Have a listen to these tracks recorded for the John Peel show on Radio 1 and decide for yourself.
