Public Image Ltd : Peel Session [1979]

Public Image Ltd or PiL as they are sometimes known are one of the most experimental bands to come out of the UK punk scene. Formed and fronted by ex Pistol Johnny Rotten under his real surname Lydon the band adopted a more electronic feel than his previous band. With some dubby basslines and eerie keyboard lines the band at times sounded very dark and sinister. Surprisingly, the band only ever recorded one session for the John Peel show when they entered the Maida Vale studio in 1979. The band's line up for the session was Lydon : vocals. Keith Levine : guitar/synth. Jah Wobble : bass. Martin Atkins : drums.

Note: While PiL's earlier recordings are a must for any record collection some of the later stuff is er, crap for want of a better description. The above Peel Session came from a 4 disc set called 'Plastic Box'. Buy that if you can as a great introduction to the band.
