It's A Living Thing [Themes 2]

Second part in the 'Themes' series and this time it's 'animal' songs. Again there's a few tracks I'm familiar with but there's a bit more music that is new to me. Once again I've not played the selection yet so could be good, could be bad.

The Wave Pictures : Puncture My Pride

London based rock trio, consisting of David Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Johnny Helm. The first line-up of the band came together in Wymeswold, Leicestershire, United Kingdom in 1998. They recorded and self-released a string of albums before finally settling in London with the current line-up. After the release of “Sophie” (2006) on Smoking Gun Records, the band signed a two record deal with the London independent label Moshi Moshi records. Their first album for the label, “Instant Coffee Baby” was released in 2008. The follow up (provisionally titled “I Swam Out To Greet You”) is due in 2009.”Thank god for the Wave Pictures, life would be so much duller without them.” - Robin Warren. [last.fm]

The Wave Pictures are an indie three-piece, instrumentally limited and hardly ambitious rhythmically or melodically, but they evoke the all-time greats - Lou Reed, Tom Verlaine, Jonathan Richman and Bob Dylan. Evoke them. They don't rival them or rip their pedestals from under them. No, in their own very English way they make you think of the simple three-chord US drone-rock of the Velvets, Modern Lovers et al while the frontman's vocals recall the classic tuneless rock whiners who turned non-singing into an art form and his lyrics run the gamut of styles from impressionistic to novelistic. THE WAVE PICTURES are signed to our spiritual sister label Moshi Moshi, and they have been kind enough to share with us a collection that compiles songs from several previous releases. We can’t wait to catch them this summer at the River to River Festival (South Street Seaport on August 7th)! [The Team Love Library]
