The Big Gun / Basil Pieroni [Split Flexi-Disc]

Ah, the flexi-disc. every fanzine editor's dream. It seems that every indie band of the C86 era featured on at least one of these flimsy records early in their careers. This one however was the first release from a local label called Hi-Fibre which was run by the guys from The Big Gun. As far as I know the only other release on the label was a 7" single also by The Big Gun called Heard About Love/Happens All The Time. You can imagine what sort of sound the band made just by learning that on the run out groove to that single were etched the words 'Just like Edwyn'. The a-side to the single was played by John Peel on at least one occasion, the night I heard it on his show was also the very first time I heard Public Enemy on the radio which goes to show the diversity of the music on the Peel show. And that would be that as far as this flexi goes. Another tiny entry in the history of Scottish pop music except the second track on the flexi is by another guy who had spent years playing in local bands in Irvine, one Basil Pieroni. His contribution to this flexi in 1986 probably looked to be his only recorded output but Basil is now better known for being the guitarist in excellent Glasgow band Butcher Boy who have released 2 albums to date.

Jeffrey Lewis : 12 Crass Songs

Anyone who has the idea to cover a Crass song in a folk(y) style must be crazy. To record a full album of such compositions would seem like the worst idea in the history of popular music. The end result would have to sound like an unfunny joke. The Wurzels covering Anarchy In The Uk anyone? How Jeffrey Lewis came up with this idea is anyone's guess and how anyone could give him the encouragement and help in turning the idea into an actual project is unfathomable. But do it he did and guess what, it turns out it wasn't a bad idea at all. Crass songs were never written with acoustic guitars, strings, tinkly piano and girlie backing vocals but Lewis pulls it all together and with help of some subtle lyric changes along with some not so subtle, brings the whole thing bang up to date. I can imagine hardcore Crass devotees being horrified by their beloved songs (and politics) being sabotaged by an American (anti) folk musician but what Lewis does is prove that you can get the same message across without having to scream at the top of your voice. Of course on a project like this some songs work better than others, Banned From The Roxy, I A'int Thick and Where Next Columbus? being the best of the bunch but the album certainly works surprisingly well as a whole.

Paul Quinn and Edwyn Collins : Pale Blue Eyes

This one off collaboration between Paul Quinn (Bourgie Bourgie) and Edwyn Collins (Orange Juice) was released in 1984 on Alan Horne's Swamplands label. The a-side was a cover of the Velvet Underground classic written by Lou Reed.

Magnetophone : The Man Who ate The Man

Released on 4AD Records in 2005 'The Man Who Ate The Man' was Birmingham 'electronic' duo Magnetophone's second album released. The 13 tracks on the album include collaborations with King Creosote, James Yorkston, HMS Ginafore, Kim Deal and Kelley Deal.

Memphis : You Supply The Roses

There's not really much I can tell you about this single, even searching on the web doesn't throw up much info. I remember buying the 12" version when it was released in 1985 only because I had read that it was James Kirk's (Orange Juice) new band. I'm sure they only recorded this one single which was released on Alan Horne's (Postcard Records) new label Swamplands. The version I have posted here is the 7" single which is exactly the same as the 12" except for the omission of an instrumental version of 'Roses'.

Strawberry Switchblade reviewed this single for Smash Hits magazine in the 28th March-10th April issue. Here's what they had to say ...
-
MEMPHIS: You Supply The Roses (Swamplands)
Rose: Got to be Single of The Fortnight for me. Great vocals, great guitar, it's a great pop record with tinges of country & western. It makes me really happy - I just wish the charts were full of songs like this.
Jill: I don't think this is the best version I've heard of this song, but I like it anyway. The cover is great - a highland cow in a purple loch!

The Jesus and Mary Chain : Upside Down

The release of The Jesus And Mary Chain's debut single was one of the most anticipated events in the music world for me even though I hadn't heard a single note from the band. The music papers of the day had been talking about this new Scottish band for months, reporting mainly about their short, violence filled gigs. Not since the early days of the Sex Pistols had a band been causing so much controversy. I remember buying the record in 'Listen' one Saturday in 1984 and couldn't wait to get home to find out what the 'buzz' was all about. I wasn't to be disappointed. Clocking in at just under 3 minutes, the song was so distorted and filled with feedback that I thought there was something wrong with the needle on my record player. Even today, Upside Down still sounds as good as the day I first heard it 25 years ago. The single which has the catalogue number CRE 012 was released in November 1984 and as with all Creation Records single releases at the time, came in a folded cover. The b-side Vegetable Man was a cover of a rare Pink floyd song from the Syd Barrett era.

Primal Scream : All Fall Down

Another early Creation Records release, this time by a band who went onto bigger (and better?) things. Released in June 1985 with the catalogue number CRE 017 this was Primal Scream's first ever release. Both tracks were Byrds inspired jingle jangle pop which in my humble opinion are amongst the best the band have ever recorded.

Meat Whiplash : Don't Slip Up

From East Kilbride in Scotland, released on Creation Records, drenched in distortion and feedback you could be forgiven for thinking this was The Jesus and Mary Chain when it first assaulted your ears on the John Peel show in 1985. In fact there were strong rumours flying around at the time that this was the Reid brothers under another name. As it happens the rumours were quashed when Meat Whiplash supported the Mary Chain at the infamous North London Polytech show that ended in a riot. Legend has it that it was the support band who actually caused the riot by throwing a glass bottle back into the crowd after it had ben thrown at them on stage. This 7 inch single was the only release by the band, who took their name from a Fire Engines b-side and was allegedly produced by William Reid. The fold-out cover which featured a picture of American actor Robert Vaughn on the front was printed/folded by Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream) and Alan McGee. In the late 1980's members of the band formed The Motorcycle Boy with Alex Taylor of The Shop Assistants on vocals.

The single, which had the catalogue number CRE 020 was only released on 7 inch vinyl but the tracks have been released on various Creation Records compilations including Creation Soup Volume 2. Try e-bay for the original or Amazon for the compilations.

Fire Engines : Candyskin

I remember hearing this cracking single on John Peel around 1982 and the tune stuck in my head for years before I eventually managed to get a copy for myself. The Fire Engines were often lumped in with the Postcard Records scene although the band never recorded for the label.
Lead singer Davy Henderson later went on to form Win and Nectarine No.9.

Tracks:
01 Candyskin
02 Meat Whiplash

___________________________________________________________
With just three singles and one album, The Fire Engines were not in it for the long run. In actual fact, their career as a band only lasted 18 months although their mark on Scottish (& British) guitar pop music remains indelible to this day.
Back in 1981/2, no 7" vinyl collection was deemed credible without this little gem in it's unique fold-out poster sleeve.
A thousand jingly jangly pop bands would have never formed if it was not for Candyskin. Like many others, I actually preferred the flipside, Meat Whiplash. No_Record_Shops_Left

Mojave 3 : Ask Me Tomorrow

Ask Me Tomorrow was the debut album from Mojave 3. It was released in 1995 on 4AD Records. The band included Neil Halstead and 2 other ex members of shoegaze band Slowdive.
__________________________________________________________
Mojave 3 formed from the ashes of Slowdive in 1994. Rachel, Ian and Neil decided that distortion was fun but they wanted to make some thing that you could play on an acoustic gtr. The first album "Ask Me tomorrow" came out that year on 4AD Records , and was followed 2 yrs later by " Out Of Tune". the sound had moved on from slow country to mid-slow tempo country -rock..right-on... Alan forester had joined the band with his large c3 hammond organ, and Simon "Rosie " Rowe ,recruited from chapterhouse ,played some Robbie Robertson inspired riffage throughout. The band toured extensively before going back to cornwall to record album no3.."Excuses for Travellers". Unfortunately having spent most of the advance before booking the studio, were forced to build their own before any serious work could begin. The resulting record again owed much to the genius of young and dylan but showcased a band who's sound was evolving along with their DIY skills. "Spoon and Rafter" followed in 2002 , produced again by mark van hoen aka locust, friend and fellow traveller. Most notable for the extrodinary length of it's opening track, "Bluebird of Happiness" it was again recorded in the bands studio on trusty E16 . Between Mojave records both Rachel and Neil have released sturdy solo album's while Ian has been makin a fine and ferocious melody with his own band The Loose salute. "sweeter i've heard, but louder never" MySpace

Neil Halstead : Sleeping On Roads

Neil Halstead was the singer/guitarist with UK shoegaze band Slowdive. After two members left and the band was dropped by Creation Records the remaining members including Halstead decided on a new musical direction and a name change. Thus Mojave 3 a country, folk sounding band were born and subsequently signed to 4AD Records. Halstead released his first solo album 'Sleeping On Roads' on the same label in 2002 while still very much remaining a member of the band.

Adam + The Ants : Peel Sessions

Mention Adam + The Ants to most people and they will mention Prince Charming, Stand and Deliver and THAT white stripe painted across Adam's nose. However, delve a bit deeper and the pre make-up/pirate uniform Ants were a different proposition. I recently bought the re-mastered edition of 'Dirk Wears White Sox' and surprisingly it holds up well alongside some of the so called indie/alternative/punk bands of today. Have a listen to these tracks recorded for the John Peel show on Radio 1 and decide for yourself.

I've been tidying my music collection in recent weeks and have come across loads of long forgotten compilation cds I have made up over the years. Usually I can look at such a compilation and know what sort of mood I was in when I compiled the music. This one from around 3 years ago offers no such insight though. Edwyn Collins

Please Note : This post originally appeared on my Yahoo_Blog on April 14th 2009.

It was great to see Edwyn Collins looking so well on tonight's Reporting Scotland news bulletin. After suffering 2 strokes in 2005 the former Orange Juice vocalist is looking upbeat on his long road to recovery. The report was showing that Collins had taken an old hobby back up and had started painting wildlife again although he is having to start from scratch as he now has to use his left hand as his stronger right hand was damaged by the strokes. I sincerely hope that he continues to keep getting better. Best wishes Edwyn.
Here's 2 tracks dedicated to Edwyn and a third track from his former band Orange Juice. As usual, if you enjoy these tracks please buy the originals especially the Orange Juice stuff. Edwyn deserves it.

April Showers

Please note : This post originally appeared on my Yahoo Blog on April 7th 2009.
_______________________________________________________________
So after the nice spring day we had on the West coast of Scotland yesterday I awoke this morning to find we are being hit by heavy showers. Nothing unusual really for this part of the world where the only weather conditions seem to be light rain and heavy rain. Never one to be down in the dumps over a bit of falling water here's 5 songs to celebrate the season of April showers.
First up it's all the way back to 1983 and this track taken from a John Peel session by Twa Toots. This was the first 12" single I bought in the series of Peel Sessions released on the Strange Fruit record label. Twa_Toots_-_Please_Don't_Play_A_Rainy_Night_In_Georgia
On to 1984 now and a single released on Creation Records by The Loft. The_Loft_-_Why_Does_The_Rain?
Next up is The Pogues. Originally released on 1986's 'Poguetry In Motion' EP this version is taken from the recent boxset 'Just Look Them In The Eyes And Say Pogue Mahone'. The_Pogues_-_A_Rainy_Night_In_Soho_[Oboe_Mix}
A couple of live tracks to finish off with now. Originally released as a single and on the 'Darklands' album in 1987 this live version was recorded at the 'Camden Ballroom, London in 1998. The_Jesus_and_Mary_Chain_-_Happy_When_It_Rains
And finally in our rain soaked 5 we have the brilliant and rather underrated Beta Band with a live version of this track originally released on the 'Champion Versions' EP from 1997 and also avaliable on the soundtrack to the movie 'High Fidelity'. Recorded live at Shepherd's Bush Empire in 2004, here is ... The_Beta_Band_-_Dry_The_Rain

The Joy Of Six

This is another post that I've lifted from my old Yahoo blog. It was basically just 6 songs that I had heard on the radio in the past 48 hours. Hope you enjoy!!!
___________________________________________________________________
First up it's Canadian band Woodpigeon who've been compared to the likes of Fleet Foxes, Arcade Fire, Grizzly Bear and Belle + Sebastian. For me add in Simon and Gafunkel as well as a dash of Elliott Smith and you're not even halfway there. Just Listen for yourself and make up your own mind. One thing's for sure, you won't see a better song title this year.
Woodpigeon - In the Battle of Sun vs Curtains Sun Loses and We Sleep Until Noon
Speaking of Simon and Garfunkel I heard this track for the first time in years on the radio last night. Fits in quite well with the Woodpigeon track.
Simon_and_Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy In New York.
I know very little about the next artiste except that she is half English, half Finnish and appeared on Marc Riley's radio show last night playing some tracks including a live version of this track.
Mia_Vigar - I Wish You Rocked My World.
I've always liked David Bowie especialy his early stuff but this track was new to me until I started hearing it on the radio a few times recently. Originally released in 1965 this was the first release after Bowie changed his name from David Jones.
David_Bowie_and_the_Lower_Third - Can't Help Thinking About Me.
Another oldie now, this time from 1969. I said yesterday that I had missed the boat a bit with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but that is nothing compared to Frank Zappa. I always imagined I would hate Zappa''s music. I don't really know why this would be as I'm a big fan of his friend Captain Beefheart and in the end that was the reason I started listening to Zappa. I heard this song on the radio and was sure it was a Beefheart track that I had never heard before. It turns out it was actually a Zappa track featuring the good old Captain. Here it is, all 9 minutes 16 seconds of it.
Frank_Zappa - Willie The Pimp.
Bang up to date for the last track. Released as a 7" single last month and clocking in at under 2 minutes long, the first few bars of this song sound like a cross between The Jesus and Mary Chain and Public Image Ltd before moving into an early Creation Records type sound. The more I hear this the more I love it. Yet another album for the 'To Buy' list.

Just Desserts

For the most part this blog will be about music. However now and again I might be inspired to deviate from this a little, although the music wil never be far away. A little bit of pleasure came into my life yesterday in the shape of Carte D'Or - Caramel & Cinnamon ice-cream. I'm not usually known for my love of desserts in general and ice-cream in particular but this new product from Walls really hits the spot. Some supermarkets are selling this at half price at the moment, so get there fast and get 2 tubs for the price of 1. Satisfaction guaranteed . As promised earlier the music will never be far away, so in tribute to Mr Carte D'or 's lovely ice-cream, listen and enjoy.

Song To The Siren

It's often said that a cover version of a song is never as good as the original. In most instances I would agree with this sentiment but not when it comes to 'Song To The Siren'. Originally recorded by Tim Buckley for his 1970 album 'Starsailor' the song has been covered by artistes as diverse as Pat Boone and Robert Plant. However the outstanding version of the song was released in 1983 by the 4AD Records 'supergroup' calling themselves 'This Mortal Coil'. The track featuring Liz Fraser of The Cocteau Twins on vocals was released as a single and also appeared on the 1984 album 'It'll End In Tears'. Make up your own mind about which version is the best by clicking on the links below. Also included are another 3 versions, all bringing something different to the song. Which one is your favourite?

April Skies

Right, it's April. Spring is in the air. The flowers are blooming, the temperature is rising (ok, only slightly. I do live in Scotland after all) and the sun is in the sky (slightly obscured by clouds but it's there. Somewhere). It's not hard to find a song(s) relating to this time of the year but the one that jumps to the top of the list on account of being a track from one of the best bands ever is ... April Skies by Scotland's finest, The Jesus And Mary Chain.
Here is the full 4-track-EP for your enjoyment.

Champion Doug Veitch

Anyone having a casual look through my CD collection would quickly realise the influence that the late, great DJ, John Peel has had on my choice of listening. From my large reggae collection through to likes of Half Man Half Biscuit, Peely has been the inspiration. One of my favourite artistes from the Peel shows circa 1984/85 was Champion Doug Veitch. Born in Hawick in the Scottish borders the self styled King of Caledonian Swing was a favourite of Radio One's Peel and Andy Kershaw as well as the music magazine NME where he holds the record for the most succesive Records of the Week. Unfortunately for some reason it seems that Veitch's music has never been released on CD so anyone looking to buy his music has to be content with second hand vinyl from the likes of e-bay. Thanks to Fruitier_Than_Thou blog however you can hear Veitch's unique blend of reggae, cajun, dub, country and folk here on this 1985 Andy Kershaw radio session. LISTEN_HERE!!!

Dr. Alimantado

I still remember the day I bought this classic album on cd from Borders in Glasgow. I had never heard any of his music before but I kept reading bits and pieces about him in various books and magazines. Everyone from John Lydon to Sharleen Spiteri seemed to be a fan of his. When I got the cd home and played it for the first time I was amazed at how good and all so slightly mad the music sounded. The cd was played constantly for days before I even thought about listening to anything else. A few years later I got to see him live at 'The Ferry' in Glasgow as part of the Triptych festival and to be honest, it was the worst gig I've ever attended but don't let that put you off hearing this album.

Crass

The above picture was taken from my first ever gig (apart from a few local bands. The date was July 3rd 1981, The venue was the Trinity Church in Irvine, Ayrshire and the band was anarcho-punk collective Crass supported by Poison Girls and Annie Anxiety. The gig was organised by the local branch of CND and tickets cost a whopping £1. At the time I still had one month to go until I became a teenager but was already heavily into Crass the band as well as the label. I remember very little about the gig except for small incidental bits and pieces. One day at school rumours were going about that Crass were playing a gig in Irvine. The first initial feeling of cynicism soon gave way to excitement when I finally realised it was true. The excitement soon turned to anxiety as I wondered whether my parents would think me old enough to attend such an event. They obviously knew that I had been into the punk scene for a couple of years, even at such an early age, but playing records in my bedroom was one thing, actually attending a gig full of older people with such a bad reputation thanks to the tabloid press was quite another. I needn't have worried. Over dinner that night I mentioned it to my mother who only asked one question, 'how much will it cost?'. Straight away she handed me the one pound saying I better be quick as it will sell out with it being that cheap. On the actuak night of the gig my friend and I headed into town quite early to find large groups of people hanging around the town centre, drinking and being loud but generally well behaved. I always remember that most of the punks hanging around were wearing Exploited t-shirts which was a bit strange as their was a definite divide between the Exploited kind of punk and Crass (Crass sang 'Punk Is Dead', the Exploited sang 'Punk's Not Dead'). I must have looked really out of place. For some reason I remember wearing a blue cord jacket that night and even though I would have had a few badges on the lapel there was no other indication that I was going to the same place as those older guys wearing leather jackets, bondage trousers, studs and mohicans. Looking back I was probably closer to the true meaning of punk with my (unintentional) individual look than all the clones but it didn't feel that way at the time. When the doors of the venue opened, which was a bit strange considering Crass's anti-religious views) we were among the first people in, heading straight to the front of the stage. There was plenty of space at this time but having had no experience of gigs this size I didn't realise that the place would soon be jam packed. First on stage was Annie_Anxiety an American poet/singer/painter/actor who really didn't go down well at all with the meat heads in the crowd looking for a 3 chord thrash to pogo thuggishly to. It was hard not to feel sorry for her as she was booed and abused relentlessly and even more disgracefully, continually spat on by a section of the audience. At times she looked close to tears but full credit to her for gamely finishing her set and not giving in to those disgusting neantherals. Next up came Poison_Girls. Again the female singer was subjected to abuse and spitting but Vi Subversa (singer) was a different proposition. A lot older than most of the audience and in no mood to be intimidated by those yobs she stopped the band halfway through a song and growled ' we will not continue to be spat on'. Sensing that the gig may be abandoned the abuse halted apart from one or two of the thickest in the crowd. The band finished their set without any further incident. While waiting for Crass to appear my gig going naivity really became apparent. Me and my friend were right at the front, leaning on the stage when we noticed someone trying to push their way in. Even at our young age we weren't for giving up the space where we had stood since the doors opened. Eventually the guy, a few years older than us realised he was getting nowhere and tried a different plan of attack. Tapping us on the shoulder 'excuse me but I'm with the band and I've got to get on stage for a few songs. Any chance I could get in there?' My friend and I looked at each other and at the same time replied ' yes, no problem'. Needless to say Mr Crassman watched the rest of the gig from the place where we should have been standing, getting no closer to the band than we had been . Still to this day I remember that lesson and have never given up my space at a gig since. I don't really remember much about Crass's performance. Right at the start of their first song a large brawl broke out just behind us. Almost as if it was pre arranged to begin at the first chord. There was a report in the following week's local paper about the fighting and I thought when my parents read it I would be banned from any further gigs. It was never mentioned. So that was my first ever gig experience. I never got to see any of those bands again but they do still hold fond memories for me.

Hillsborough 1989.

PLEASE NOTE : This post originally appeared on my Yahoo blog on the 15th April 2009.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

April 15th 1989 is the day that fans of Liverpool Football Club will never forget. It wasn't the day they won yet another trophy to add to the dozens already secured in the club's great history. No, this was the day when thousands of those fans made the journey to Sheffield to watch their heroes in an F.A. Cup semi-final aginst rivals Nottingham Forest. 96 of those fans would never return home to their loved ones and many more would live with the nightmare for the rest of their lifes. There are many theories into what caused the fatal crush, many fingers have been pointed. I will leave that for the people who were there, who know the truth, who hopefully one day will see justice for those poor supporters who perished and the loved ones they left behind. I remember reading afterwards that the late Radio One DJ, a lifelong Liverpool fan, begun his first show following the tragedy with Aretha Franklin's gospel version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' a song which the Liverpool fans have made their own. Here for the 96 fans no longer with us is that song. Rest In Peace.

Feed Your Head

The December 2002 issue of Mojo magazine was a real beauty. Not for the Bob Dylan cover or interviews/features with Happy Mondays, The Libertines or The Rolling Stones. No, what made it for me was the feature entitled 'The 100 Greatest Drug Songs EVER!!!'. I remember trying in vain to compile an mp3 disc for my Walkman of those 100 songs but many were impossible to find. I still have the magazine somewhere (probably in the attic) and will dig it out sometime for another attempt at completing the list. The free cover mounted CD given away with that issue was called 'Feed Your Head', 16 songs referencing drugs of one form or another. I have selected 4 random tracks from the collection for your ears. I don't know if the magazine is still avaliable to buy, the website only gives a phone number for back issues. Failing that E-Bay is the best bet but it really is worth tracking down. Meanwhile listen below.

Malcolm Middleton

If I was asked to describe Arab Strap the first thing I would mention would be Aidan Moffat's broad, distinct Scottish accent. Because of that it sometimes seemed that Malcolm Middleton was a lesser part of the band. To be honest it was only really when the band split that I started to realise that Middleton was at the very least an equal part in what made the band great. Don't get me wrong, Arab Strap wouldn't be Arab Strap without Moffat but his musical partner was every bit as important to the band's unique sound. While reading some blogs at the weekend I was directed to Middleton's own website (link below) and was delighted to find some fantastic mp3 downloads on there. I recommend anyone, whether a fan or a newcomer to his music to have a listen as Malcolm does his on take on songs by Girls Aloud, Ladyhawke and The Saturdays as well as some rare and unreleased versions of his own songs.

The track below was Middleton's contribution to the 2007 album 'Ballads of the Book', a project which saw Scottish musicians link up with Scottish writers and poets. The lyrics to Middleton's track were written by author Alan Bissett.

Thrum - Rifferama

thrum ...
v.intr.
1. Music To strum idly on a stringed instrument.
2. To speak in a monotonous tone of voice; drone.
The dictionary definition of Thrum could not be further from the truth when describing the Scottish band of the same name. They certainly didn't strum idly on their guitars and singer Monica Queen's voice could never be described as monotonous. In fact it's hard to believe that the soaring vocals actually come from someone so small in stature. I have read Thrum's sound described thus ' imagine a band with Tammy Wynette on vocals and Neil Young on guitar' * and 'Sonic Youth meets KD Lang' **. I think that sums the band up pretty well. Formed in Lanarkshire in the early 90's the band had a relatively short career which spawned just the one album and a few singles but the band are very much an important part of the Scottish music history. monica and guitarist Johnny Smillie have gone on to release two albums under the name 'Monica Queen'.

There's A Ghost In My House!!!

This week's issue of my local newspaper the Irvine Times has the headline story ...
'I'm haunted by Bard's ghost!'
THE businessman who lives in Burns’ old Irvine house said he doesn’t pay much attention to the ghosts that live there, even if one of them is the Bard himself.
But Graham Crawley said he does get annoyed by some uninvited visitors to his Glasgow Vennel pad - snap-happy tourists. The 43-year-old said: “It’s well-documented that the house is haunted and I’m sure of it.
“I’ve seen a couple of things moving right in front of me with no explanation and I’ve even had a psychic out to investigate.
“They said the place was full of dead folk but they were all happy. I’m not bothered by spirits anyway, I’ve never met a ghost who could give you a black eye.”
For full story see this week's Irvine Times.

King Creosote : Happy Never After

This track is taken from a Fence Records sampler called 'Fence Go Fishin' - Fence Sampler #2'. Released in 1999 or 2000, I can't find an exact date. The cd-r contained tracks by Lone Pigeon, King Creosote, Pip Dylan, Bummi Bako and Mundo Jazz amongst others. I bought the album direct from Fence in August 2002 via the website. Well in fact I didn't buy the album at all. What actually happened was I ordered the very first Fence sampler, Who's Afraid Of Fence? which was also released as a cd-r. The kind people at Fence generously added 8 tracks from the 2nd sampler on at the end. The e-mail I recieved confirming that my purchase(s) had been posted out that day said 'sampler #1 - plus the best of sampler #2 (now deleted) has been posted out today first class! Thankfully, the music outshines the artwork!!'. Not many record companies are that honest or generous. The honesty theme continues to this day on the website with this description of 'Fence Go Fishin'. 'The Fence sampler that time forgot. Some gems, some guff'. Brilliant stuff .
So here from Fence Go Fishin' is ... King_Creosote_-_Happy_Never_After
