Carter USM : Lean On Me I Won't Fall Over

In the early 90's a few of my friends were really into Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. Personally I wasn't so sure, ok they had some decent songs and were supposed to be very good live but for me they had a very short shelf life and after their first couple of albums I never listened to them again. This single, released in 1993 came from their 4th album which I was totally unaware of ... until today. So I am posting this single without ever having heard it or even read a review of it. Why??? Well today I had 10 minutes to kill in the town and decided to have a peek through a very small charity shop window. On seeing a wall full of books I took a wander inside and found, as well as a great choice of books, 2 racks full of cds. I didn't even have time to look through them all but I did notice a sign saying '50p each'. Excellent value if you ask me but having very little time to browse and not feeling good about walking out of a charity shop without buying anything I settled on 4 cd singles including this one. So I approached the counter and handed over the discs to the smiling lady who informed me 'the cds are 50p each ..... or 5 for a pound so you'' need to pick another one' ... 20p for a cd (single or album)!!!! Anyway that cheered me up no end, I didn't pick another disc to make up the 5 (generous to a fault me) but I did manage to make time for a quick look at some other stuff on the way out. It looks like someone has handed in their full cd collection of charty dance singles with a few indie and pop ones thrown in. I'll be back at the end of the week for a better look :) So I hope you enjoy this single, which I have just noticed includes a Sugarcubes cover, if you don't console yourself that it only cost me 25p

Various : Sun Is Shining [Mojo Magazine 2007]

If news reports are to be believed, Britain will be enjoying a brilliant heatwave this week. Already the temperature is rising and the cold drinks are going down a treat. The bookmakers are even offering short odds on record breaking temperatures by the middle of the week, which means only one thing ... it's reggae time again.

This excellent compilation was given away free with the July 2007 issue of Mojo magazine.

The Fugs : First Album

A loping, ridiculous, and scabrous release, the Fugs' debut mashed everything from folk and beat poetry to rock and rhythm & blues -- all with a casual disregard for sounding note perfect, though not without definite goals in mind. Actually compiled from two separate sessions originally done for Folkways Records, and with slightly different lineups as a result, it's a short but utterly worthy release that pushed any number of 1964-era buttons at once (and could still tick off plenty of people). Sanders produced the sessions in collaboration with the legendary Harry Smith, who was able to sneak the collective onto Folkways' accounts by describing them as a "jug band," and it's not a far-off description. A number of songs sound like calm-enough folk-boom fare, at least on casual listening, though often with odd extra touches like weirdly muffled drums or out of nowhere whistles and chimes. Others, meanwhile, are just out there -- thus, the details of the perfect "Supergirl." Then there's "Boobs a Lot," the post-toke/acid lament "I Couldn't Get High," and the pie-in-the-face to acceptable standards of the time, "Slum Goddess." Throughout it all, the Fugs sound like they're having a perfectly fun time; the feeling is loose, ragged, but right, and while things may be sloppy around the edges, often that's totally intentional. Certainly little else could explain the random jamming and rhythmic chanting/shouting on "Swinburne Stomp." Good as the original album is, the CD version is what any serious fan needs to find, thanks to the inclusion of 11 bonus tracks. Some come from the original sessions, including the signature tune "We're the Fugs" and "The Ten Commandments," while others appear from various live jams. Then there's the self-explanatory "In the Middle of Their First Recording Session the Fugs Sign the Worst Contract Since Leadbelly's."

Soul Family Sensation : I Don't Even Know If I Should Call You Baby

Around 1988/89 I decided it was time to leave the family nest and go my own way in the world. I managed to get the tenancy on a small council flat about 5 minutes from my parent's house. When you are younger you don't realise just how much it costs to have a place of your own and how much work you have to put into it. So for a few years money was in short demand which meant some changes to my lifestyle. I was never really one for clubbing although I did do more than my fair share of pubbing. That was the first thing that had to change but instead of going out less I started going out later. Usually a friend or two would come round and we would sit in my flat with a few beers, listening to music until it was pretty late at night at which point we would head into town for more beer. This wasn't a problem to be honest as we would be in good spirits as we got to the pubs having spent a few hours drinking and listening to good music at a fraction of the price the pubs were charging. The next thing to change and this was much more of a problem was the music. For years I had been spending most of my spare cash on records and now I was finding that there just wasn't as much spare cash to go round. I really couldn't do without my fix of new music so I really had to do something. And so instead of spare cash it was spare time I was spending hunting down vinyl gems (and plenty of dross) in market stalls, second hand record shops and the bargain bins of Woolworths and Wh Smith. I was pretty lucky if truth be told as at the time bands like Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Carter USM and Mega City 4 were all the rage, bands that I just couldn't take to. So my bargain hunting started to pay off and my tastes in music started to change quite a bit as well. Yesterday when I was over in my old home town I had a wee peek in the local Oxfam shop (I'm beginning get addicted to these charity shops all of a sudden) and saw an album by Soul Family Sensation. I don't know anything about the band but in my early 90's bargain hunting days I did buy their debut single from a market stall in town. Seems like my bargain hunting has come full circle.

Grandaddy : The Sophtware Slump

I love this album. Not many albums open up with an amazing track that's nearly 9 minutes long. On the rare occasion it happens you usually find that the rest of the album fails to live up to that opening. Not the Sophtware Slump though. The first track is a statement of intent that sets the tone for the rest of the album. This is one album to sit back, relax and let the music do the talking.

XTC : Making Plans For Nigel

When I attended secondary school in the early '80's my home was only a few minutes walk away from the school gates. Every lunch time my classmates would be huddled in corners of the playground having a fly smoke or just trying to keep out of the wind and the rain. Not me though, I could always be found back home in my bedroom, eating my lunch and listening to a handful of punk or new wave 7" singles. This XTC single always reminds me of those days. The version I had was a limited edition that came in a sleeve which folded out into some kind of boardgame. I probably haven't played it since those school lunch times so this really is a blast from the past.

Siouxsie And The Banshees : Once Upon A Time / The Singles

If I was a teenager growing up today I doubt very much if I would be so obsessed with music. This has nothing to do with the quality of today's music. I'm not yet one of those grumpy old men moaning that today's music is all 'thump, thump, thump' and people shouting. No, my concern is with the lack of places nowadays where I can buy my beloved sounds. It must be hard for today's teenager who's music is neatly stored on their iPods or mobile phones to understand the thrill it once was to enter a local record store and search through racks and racks of records to find the new Jesus and Mary Chain 12" or a second hand copy of a rare Captain Beefheart bootleg. Nowadays the latest R&B track is only a click away on your pc's keyboard. And when you're mobile phone's memory is full it's only another click away from that piece of music being discarded into cyberspace. There was none of that when I was younger. When you got fed up with a record or grew out of a group, they either went to the back of your ever expanding collection or you took them to your local 2nd hand record shop where you would get paid a fraction of what you originally paid for them or more likely you would exchange them for other records. 3 Simple Minds picture discs for Sonic Youth's debut album anyone? I was visiting my home town last week where in days gone past I could easily, and happily spend a full Saturday afternoon going from record shop to record shop, browsing through racks crammed with thousands of pieces of vinyl. Today the only 2 places in town where I could buy music were Asda and Tesco. No Thanks!!! I can remember at least a places in town that at one time or another I have bought music from. From the likes of Our Price right down to the tiny market stalls that sold 2nd hand market stalls I have spent thousands of pounds over the years. At one time even Boots The Chemist and John Menzies were havens for any music lover. One of my favourite stores was Arnotts. For anyone who doesn't remember, Arnott's was a department store that was later taken over by Hourstons. Every Saturday I would walk through the 'Ladies Department', go down the escelators, through the 'Homeware Department' and over to the far right hand corner where the 'Record Department' was situated. I remember going in one Saturday in the early 80's and it was like a treasure island to me. On the long counter there was box upon box crammed full of 7" singles all for 10p each. The store must have decided to get rid of all it's old stock and there it was right in front of me. I only remember a few of the records I bought that day (and also everyday after that I had any money until the sale finished) but I do know that it was the most amount of records I had bought in my life. I do remember buying loads of punk/new wave singles at the time but also loads of stuff that I had never heard or heard of before. Once I had got through all the decent stuff and still having money left it was hit and miss really. I did buy a few Siouxsie And The Banshees singles that day, some of which I still own although I haven't played in years. So that's the reason for today's album. It's funny how when you talk to anyone who has ever been into 'punk' music they will talk about The Clash, the Pistols, The Damned, etc but very rarely does anyone mention the Banshees which is pretty strange considering they were one of the most enduring and succesful bands of that era. So here's the compilation album 'Once Upon A Time / The Singles'.

After listening to The Damned all day yesterday I'm going to stay with the 'punk scene' for today's post. This time we head over the Atlantic to San Francisco for Dead Kennedy's debut album 'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables' originally released in 1980 on Cherry Red Records.

The Damned : Machine Gun Etiquette

Although I still play random tracks by The Damned every now and again it's been a number of years since I listen to any of their albums. I still have a few of their early releases in a big box of punk vinyl afely stored away in the loft but as yet I haven't got round to replacing them on CD. At the end of last week someone mentioned to me that the band were playing at the ABC in Glasgow last Saturday night. This has obviously stayed in my head as when my pc crashed on Saturday and the frustration was kicking in as I tried what little I know to get it up and running again, The Damned song 'Smash It Up' kept creeping into my thoughts. That seriously the way I felt as attempt after attempt failed to get me back into computer land. Fortunately I persevered until things were sorted with a few software discs rather than a hammer. So here's The Damned album that features the song 'Smash It Up'. Released in 1979 on
Chiswick Records Machine Gun Etiquette was the 3rd album released by the band. It featured 3 songs that were released as singles, Love Song, Smash It Up and I Just Can't Be Happy Today which was the first single I ever bought from a record shop. This version of the album, which was released on cd also features 3 cover versions, Ballroom Blitz (The Sweet), Looking At You (MC5) and White Rabbit (The Great Society/Jefferson Airplane). The band's line-up for this album was Dave Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (guitars, keyboards and vocals), Rat Scabies (drums, vocals) and Algy Ward (bass, vocals). Joe Strummer and Mick Jones of The Clash, who were recording at the same studios make an uncredited appearance on the title track while Lemmy of Motorhead plays bass on Ballroom Blitz. For tracklisting see cover image, above.

Craaaashhh!!!

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. I have been quite lucky with my computers so far. Apart from one or two little problems over the years I have managed to avoid any catastrophes. Until last weekend that is. Everything was fine when I switched off on Friday night. Certainly nothing to suggest the problems I was going to have the next morning. I had quite a busy weekend ahead. Cup final in the afternoon and then some planned time with the family so I wasn't planning on doing much work on the p.c. Just as well as come Saturday morning I booted up the system to read my e-mails etc but was only greeted with a blue screen filled with all sorts of mumbo jumbo. To be honest, I am hopeless when it comes to anything bar the basics of computing so this was way over my head. After trying to reboot a few times and trying one or two other 'tricks' that I've picked up along the way I gave up. Kick off time at the football was getting closer and apart from that I didn't have a clue what to do next. So after the football finished it was back home, hoping that the p.c. would somehow have fixed itself. Obviously these things don't work that way so I was greeted with the same blue screen displaying the same mumbo jumbo. Now I knew that the computer repair shop wouldn't be open again until Monday and even then it is quite a busy shop so I would probably have to wait nearly a week to get my system back in working order. So not wanting to wait that long I did what any sensible person would do. I tried to fix it myself!!! Well somehow I've managed to get it up and running. That's the good news. The bad news is, I've lost everything that was on my hard drive. Holiday photos. Gone!!! Over 100 folders of music. Gone!!! Videos. Gone!!! CVs and other letters and documents. Gone!!! Databases that I've spent months on. Gone!!! I've had to reinstall loads of programs that I didn't even know I had or needed. Even the simplest things like extracting a zip file can't be done without installing the program all over again. I'm pretty sure that over the next week or so I'll be constantly adding programs to get me back up to date. Buy even after all that I'm just happy that I'm up and running again. I really didn't know just how much I relied on this machine every single day. Some people say they couldn't do without their mobile phones. Others couldn't do without their car or television. For me nothing comes close to being without my p.c. for any length of time. One thing's for sure though, I won't be taking anything for granted and will be backing up EVERYTHING to disc :)

Crass Records

I bought my first ever record in 1979 aged just 11 years old. The record was 'The Great Rock n Roll Swindle' by the Sex Pistols. Having been brought up in a large family, I had 5 older sisters and an older brother, I was always aware of music being played throughout my early years. Unlike some people who claim to have grown up listening to their parent's or older sibling's eclectic record collections the music I grew up listening to was provided by David Cassidy, The New Seekers, Bay City Rollers, The Osmonds and whatever pop was in the charts of the day. It was no surprise then that the Pistols would make such an immediate impact on me. It was probably the swearing that hooked me at first. I was only 11 years old remember and swearing was still generally frowned upon at the time. The music was compelling as well. This might not have been a classic Pistols single but it still sounded a lot more relevant to my young ears than any amount of tartan clad Scottish boy bands ever could. I didn't know at the time that the Pistols had by then split up and punk was virtually dead. Not that I would probably have cared anyway. I had 3 years of music to catch up on and I spent the next year and every penny I had buying every punk record I could find. I basically spent every avaliable moment I had searching through record shops, market stalls, jumble sales, anywhere I could find some precious vinyl. It wasn't long before the second wave of punk came along and I became as obsessed with those groups as much as I was with the Pistols and Clash etc. One day I heard some older guys talking about a new group called Crass and on a visit to Glasgow the next weekend I set about trying to find their records. I remember looking in the window of one city centre record shop and seeing Bloody Revolutions on the wall. I still remember the excitement and the disappointment to this day. Excited because I knew for sure that this new band existed and I loved the look of the records cover. Disappointed because it was a Sunday and at that time not many shops opened on that day. It wasn't long though before I got my hands on some Crass records and so began yet another obsession that would last me for the rest of my school days. The great thing about Crass and their record label was the price of the records. Every sleeve had the words 'Pay No More Than ...' Sometimes it was 75p other times even less. Usually the records came in a fold out sleeve with one side a giant poster and the other political writings and slogans. For someone my age, relying on pocket money to fund my obsession it was a dream come true. Here are 4 EPs released on Crass Records in 1981/1982.

Charity Shop Bargains : 01

As the weather was brilliant at the weekend we decided to take a wee day trip up the coast to the Ayrshire town of Largs. While waiting for my partner outside one shop I noticed a couple of charity shops nearby. I had read on some blogs of people finding some bargains in the cd racks of these types of places so decided to have a quick look. It wasn't that great to be honest but in amongst the usual Spice Girls, Take That and Ronan Keating cds there were a few items of interest. In the first shop I bought the 4 cd singles above which were by Fluke, Orbital, Death In Vegas and The Chemical Brothers. Not bad for £2 in total. I've put one track from each of the singles below.

02 Death In Vegas - Dirt [Old Skool Mix]

03 Orbital - Times Fly [Slow]

04 Fluke - Slid [PDF Mone]*

* The sleeve states that this track is Squirt but it is actually Slid. Or so I'm told.

Renegade : The Lives And Tales Of Mark E. Smith

Renegade is the latest book to hit the shelves about one of rock's most enduring characters Mark E. Smith. For anyone who doesn't already know, Smith is leader/vocalist with Manchester band The Fall. To be precise, Mark E. Smith is The Fall. The book has been described in various places as: A Riot, Unbeatable, Vicious and Hilarious. All of these descriptions are spot on and as well as describing the book could also be describing the man himself. The book itself is an 80,000 odd word ramble, taking in Smith's thoughts on everything from alcohol and drugs to footballers and ex band mates. At times the humour is laugh out loud. At times you don't even know if he's being serious or not. Throughout the book, as in real life, Smith pulls no punches. That's what makes this book such a great read.
