Wounded Knee : Free EP

-
Recorded on the 16th April 2010 in Alloway, close to Burn's Cottage, produced by Chris Dooks. Thanks to The University of The West of Scotland, Eleanor Dooks and Bar Libertine. We were so lucky to record this exclusive three track E.P. with WK and the evening gig was incredible - Mr Knee put in a hard day's work with Ayrtime and then went on to perform in a near-capacity crowd at Bar Libertine. The blurb from Benbecula records below says it all!Edinburgh-based Wounded Knee's live work is a mesmerising hallucinatory trip of vocal loops and found instruments. A postmodern Hebridean waulking song ethic, along with one of the most accomplished dramatic tenors in contemporary music, forms a unique hypnotic and honest sound that is without cliché or match. During 2008-9 WK's live style mediated toward improvised journeys into vocal realisation with performances reaching an almost primal level. Song, spoken word and sound effects drawing influences from as far afield as Gaelic psalm, improvisation and throat techniques à la Bobby McFerrin and even scat. At the heart, a modern symbiosis of folk and mantra, culminating in an artist who is unique, playful and captivating. [text, benbecula.com]

Alisdair Roberts : Free EP

Recorded on the 2nd of April 2010 in Alloway, close to Burn's Cottage, produced by Chris Dooks. Thanks to The University of The West of Scotland, Eleanor Dooks and Bar Libertine.
If you weren't at this gig then you missed a real treat. Alasdair gave us a cracking hour and twenty of his ghostly ballads, middle-age tunings and communication with the ancestors. It was completely beautiful. And not only that, Alasdair and Ayrtime recorded this wonderful EXCLUSIVE four track digital EP especially for us! This EP features an unreleased track and also a preview of Roberts new album 2010's 'Too Long In This Condition'. The Man was on the cover of The Wire magazine for goodness sakes! The E.P. is free for all Ayrtime punters and beyond."Alasdair Roberts has released three excellent albums as Appendix Out and five under his own name, his spectral folk drawing comparisons with fellow travellers such as Will Oldham. Although [primarily] original works, Roberts’s records have been infused with the enduring melodies and lyrical twists of ancient folk music." (The Observer)
"Roberts discovers the inner mystery of traditional music and shows that if this infinitely expressive material is respected, it may yet reward us with results that sound utterly unprecedented." (The Times)
Alasdair Roberts has toured and trodden the boards with such artists as Joanna Newsom, Magnolia Electric Co, Bill Callahan/Smog, Dick Gaughan, Waterson/Carthy, Hawk and a Hacksaw, Eddi Reader (doing The Songs of Robert Burns), The Anomoanon, Shirley Collins, Richard Youngs and too many others to mention. For the Ayrtime podcast Alasdair will hopefully give us an exclusive session to distribute.

ALEX CHILTON

ALEX CHILTON
28-12-50 to 17-03-10
-
Influential U.S. singer-songwriter Alex Chilton died last week at the age of 59. Chilton started his music career as singer with 60's band The Box Tops who had a massive hit worldwide with 'The Letter'. After the band split Chilton joined Big Star where critical acclaim rather than mega sales was the order of the day. Alex was a major influence on many of today's 'alternative'bands none more so than Scotland's own Teenage Fanclub.
